The US government will confiscate bitcoins for $24 million from the markets in the darknet

The US government wants to confiscate 4 000 BTC that were seized during the arrest of the sellers and the closing of the darknet markets. To date, the cost of such quantity of bitcoins is more than $24 million.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of justice of the County, Maryland on Tuesday, prosecutors indicted two U.S. citizens — Ryan Perez (Ryan Farace) and Robert Swain (Robert Swain). The defendants allegedly produced the drugs and distributed them via trading platforms the darknet.

The statement claimed that the accused also received proceeds from the sale of drugs in bitcoin in the period from November 2013 to June 2017, which were seized by law enforcement.

«Under the indictment the government is seeking forfeiture of at least $5 665 000 plus 4 000 bitcoins, which is assumed to represent the income from illegal sales of drugs», — said in a statement.

If approved, this request will become the latest addition to the existing pool of cryptocurrency seized by the United States government, which further can be sold through auctions and will go on the market.

This is not the first time authorities confiscated bitcoins (or other cryptocurrencies) as part of the closure of markets in the darknet. One of the largest seizures was the removal of the 144,000 BTC founder of the darknet market Silk Road. They were subsequently sold at auctions between 2013 and 2015.

Earlier this year the U.S. marshals Service also held
the auction for the sale of more than 3 800 bitcoins ($51 million) — the first after the sale 2 700 BTC in 2016. In addition, in March of this year, the marshals Service announced
on the auction for the sale of 2 170 BTC seized in connection with various criminal, civil and administrative cases. Meanwhile, in another indictment in the spring of this year the US government also tried to confiscate 500 bitcoins once charged four people in the creation of false identities.

Not only the United States actively selling cryptocurrency obtained by unlawful means. Recently the government of Bavaria sold
on the cryptocurrency exchanges for $14 million. According to reports, two months it was sold 1 BTC 312, 399 1 BCH, 1 312 BTG and 220 ETH through more than 1600 transactions in the German trading platform.
