Veterans cryptocurrency community well remember a series of spam attacks on the Bitcoin network in 2015-2016, when tens and even hundreds of thousands of «junk» transactions filled all the blocks, causing delays transaction of ordinary users and a manifold increase in commissions in the network. Now such fun in the blockchain of Bitcoin is very expensive, but there is another popular blockchain, are also vulnerable to such attacks is Ethereum.
According to Etherscan, July 2, through the Ethereum network for the first time since the beginning of the year less than 500 000 transactions. Before that their number was relatively constant and amounted to about 650 000 – 750 000 transactions per day.
The reason for that was a sudden increase of the Commission that in the period from 30 June to 2 July reached one dollar. However, this was preceded by certain events. Namely, starting from 30 June the spam Ethereum. Initially the culprit acknowledged token GRAM — fake token allegedly belonging ICO Telegram. One of the wallets with coins GRAM began to send one token to the other address on the network. During the day, there were about 6,000 transactions.
But obviously this is not enough to ensure that the cost of commissions has grown so much. Soon began to appear on other tokens, with purses which are of such mailing. At the moment, the list of tokens distributed as follows: DATx, OCN, LET, ARP, NC, AIT, IONC, TBCoin, LXT, Drink, BRM, HPC, GRAM, EES, 3DB, SGCC, ICC. A distinctive feature of all transactions is the increased price of gas — more than 400 gwei and the called function drop().
Obviously, this is not the handiwork of the projects associated with these tokens. Function drop() is implemented in a random smart contract source code which unfortunately is not displayed. Most likely, this was a planned attack on the network, but the organizers and their motives remain unknown.
Some attribute the problem with voting on the stock exchange FCoin, previously has been criticized for its existing model of «mining for trading commissions».
Anyway, such episodes in the Ethereum blockchain are not uncommon. Last time the culprit of this incident was cryptocurrency exchange Binance that is spent while sending their transactions much more than required. Then the situation managed to be solved in one day.
Despite the fact that the problem of recent days has almost exhausted itself, the transaction cost at the time of publication is already about 0.5 dollar, she once again showed the low network throughput, which is unsuitable not only because of the excessive load, as in the case of CryptoKitties, but in the case of malicious acts, and do not require significant material costs.
